Sunrise Yoga Denver Parks: Washington & City Park
Denver's best early morning yoga and meditation spots. Washington Park and City Park open at 5 a.m. for sunrise sessions before summer heat arrives.
How we reported this
Denver Parks and Recreation reported 12,400 sunrise permits issued for group yoga and meditation at city sites through June 2026, a 22 percent jump from the same period last year.
The increase tracks with longer daylight hours and daytime temperatures that now reach 85 degrees by 10 a.m. in July. Residents shift sessions to 5:30 a.m. to avoid the heat that settles over the Front Range later in the morning.
Washington Park and City Park sessions
Washington Park on South Downing Street opens its grassy fields at 5 a.m. for unguided practice. The central lawn near Smith Lake offers flat ground and east-facing views that catch first light. City Park on 17th Avenue provides a second option with open meadows east of Ferril Lake, where the Denver Botanic Gardens border allows quiet seating on the grass before staff arrive at 7 a.m.
Both sites fall under the city’s free dawn-access policy that began in May 2025. No reservations are required for solo or small-group use, though larger classes must register through the Parks and Recreation online portal at least 48 hours ahead.
Practical steps for first visits
A standard yoga mat costs $12 at local shops along East Colfax Avenue. Participants are advised to arrive 15 minutes early to claim space near the water edges where wind stays lighter. Restrooms at the Washington Park boathouse open at 5:30 a.m. during summer months. City Park restrooms near the playground open at the same time.
Those new to the routine can join the free 30-minute guided meditation led by Denver Parks staff every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:45 a.m. in the Washington Park pavilion. The program runs through August 27. After that date, staff shift focus to evening programs as sunrise times move later.
